The Rules for Goddess Chess

A Game of Strategy...

A Game of Trinities...

A Game of Love...

The rules for Goddess Chess:™

Goddess Chess is played on a 9X9 chess board, a 9X9 Matrix...a Trinity of Trinities.  It is a fitting tribute to the Triple Goddess of Virgin/Mother/Crone, who is present in the mythologies of many ancient cultures.

The pieces and moves in Goddess Chess™ remain the same as in Western Chess, but there are two extra pieces for each side of the board: the "Virgin," and an extra Pawn who sits in front of the Virgin.

The Virgin sits to the left of the King. The King becomes the Crone; the Crone is flanked on the right by the Queen, who becomes the Mother.

  • The Crone assumes the move of the King in Western Chess and moves one space in any direction.  The Crone is older, and tires easily; she has slowed down from the days of her Wild Youth, perhaps she has a touch of arthritis, or sciatica; She has Learned Wisdom.  She is an Elder of her tribe, perhaps a Chieftess. She may also be a Shaman - a Shakerjan.  Her tribe rallies around her to protect her, knowing that she cannot move as swiftly as she did in the days of her youth.

  • The Mother assumes the move of the Queen in Western Chess.  Although she may be as young as a female in earliest puberty, she is changed forever by becoming a Bringer-Forth-Of-Life. The miracle of giving birth brings forth unbelievable powers - the Mother has the full sweep of the board, moving in any direction, for as many squares as she can until she encounters another piece.  As in Western Chess, if the piece is hers, she stops before it; if the piece is from the other side, she removes that piece and assumes it's square.
  • The Virgin is young, innocent, and untried - and also adventurous, flirtatious, occasionally outrageous.  She leaps about with unfettered glee and a zest for life.  Her move is two squares with a leap over any intervening piece; she can leap over one of her own side's pieces or over the piece of the other side; such a leap does not result in a take.  The Virgin takes a piece by landing on its square at the end of her move.

You might consider the Virgin - "You." I have framed this game in the context of the Divine Feminine, but the Divine Masculine experiences the same Grand Themes in Life: Untried (just another name for "Virgin")/Fatherhood/Old Man.

As with Modern Chess, Goddess Chess™ is a game of capture; no one gets killed, so relax, enjoy and have fun with this sophisticated variation of a great game.

The Goddess Chess™ game evolved from my extensive historical research with the Goddesschess Partnership, and love of Modern Chess and Board Games.  Numerology, the magic square, and the earliest board games are all tied to the Great Mother, the Goddess. Pieces and Boards for this game have been created by me so you can enjoy this fresh new game.
