Chess Femme News

News About Women in Chess

I only report on tournaments where at least one female played.  If I'm not sure a named player is male or female, I may leave the name out or include it, so on occasion I may omit a woman player from the results or include a man player in error.

IV Calvià Chess Festiva
October 6 - 24, 2007
Calvià, Mallorca
If I were a professional chessplayer, I'd do my best to spend my life in Spain, which just seems chuck full of this kind of event.  Calvia hosts several different tournaments under one roof:  Seniors, Juniors, Open, etc. etc.  There were 144 players in the "main" event and 55 players in the "senior" event.  The "main" event was won by GM Kevin Spraggett (CAN 2580) with 8.0/9.  When did Spraggett start playing for Canada, geez, I'm really behind the times!  I'm not sure what's going on with the final standings tables, as the official website table shows that Spraggett finished in second place with 7 points, behind GM Victor Mikhalevski with 8 points.
So, I guess we have to take the final standing stables at the official site with a grain of salt.  Here are the final standings of the chess femmes who participated in the "main" event, based on the NOT UPDATED final standings table:

9 38 IM Arakhamia-Grant Ketevan 2432 GEO
39 55 IM Zozulia Anna 2343 BEL
62 54 IM Fierro Baquero Martha L 2345 ECU
91 90   Ignacz Rozsa 2079 HUN 4
99 98 WFM Schmitz Manuela 2035 GER 4
110 120   Strikovic Maja 1917 ESP
126 132   Dominguez Almansa Flora 1408 ESP 3
139 136   Martinez Fernandez Emma 1435 ESP 2
140 140   Mossiaguine Anastasia 0 SWE
142 141   Mossiaguine Arina 0 SWE

The "seniors" event was won by GM Juan Manuel Bellon Lopez (ESP 2434), with 7.5/9.  Only one chess femme participated in this event, WFM Margarita Komysheva (RUS 2174), who finished in 31st place with 4.0.
