News About Women in Chess

Darlings, I only report on tournaments where at least one female played.  If it's men only playing, it doesn't get reported here.  If I'm not sure a named player is male or female, I leave the name out, so on occasion I may omit a chess femme (or may include a male with a feminine-sounding name!)

2006 Spanish Championship
November 22 - 30, 2006

I checked the official website while I was preparing this report (on February 20, 2007) and all it gave was a list of hotels, maps and such like - no list of players, no round results, no final cross-table.  This is an official website?  Oh well.  This report is from ever-reliable TWIC.  There were 2-groups of six players each in the "championship"? I'm not sure how this worked, but there were no chess femmes participating, so no report.

I'm not sure what this tournament is that had 100 players, but it was evidently held in conjunction with the Championship, and in this event chess femmes participated, so it gets reported!  TWIC has only the top 29 finishers.  1. Moreno Ruiz, Javier m ESP 2470 7½; 8. Vega Gutierrez, Sabrina wm ESP 2299 6½; 24. Trujillo Delgado, Dafnae wf ESP 2206 5½.

February 5, 2007:
Chess Femme Fatale Arianne Caoili is back in the news.  If only she would put this much effort and energy into her chessplaying, sigh.  She is either participating or was participating in a "Dancing with the Stars" competition in Australia, and was accused of having a professional dance background, labeled a "fake" by one of the judges.  There are lots of articles about this on the internet.  Here's the story from the Herald Sun:

Chess siren won't move

Nui Te Koha

November 26, 2006 12:00am

PROVOCATIVE prancer Arianne Caoili denies claims she lied about her dance past.

"I don't feel guilty and I've done nothing wrong," chess champion Caoili, 19, said.  Caoili said her triumph as a Dancing with the Stars finalist was ruined by accusations she is a trained dancer.

Stars judge Todd McKenney does not believe Caoili's amateur status and branded her a fake.  Caoili's mother, Annette, told a Brisbane newspaper her daughter excelled in classical ballet at the Academy of London.  Yesterday, Arianne Caoili denied all charges.

"I am not responsible for what my mother says. I am only responsible for what I say," Caoili declared.  Caoili said she took "grade one tiny tot ballet" and salsa les sons "with old people, learning how to move".  She denied studying at the London Academy.  "I am a professional chess player. I have travelled 10 months a year since I was eight," Caoili said.  "Where did I find time for a professional ballet career? I don't think so."

Caoili and dance partner, Carmelo Pizzino, were "depressed" by McKenney's charges and media fallout. "It's been so hard to cope with," she said. "The joy of being in the grand final is non-existent.  "We need to get back our joy, find our inspiration and start dancing. Given the limited time we have, it's going to be difficult.  "When you feel the people may have doubts about you, that dampens any inspiration.

"But I have enough self-worth to know who I am and know these allegations are completely wrong.".

In Europe, Caoili has been described as the Anna Kournikova of chess.  "That's absurd," Caoili said. "Firstly, I can actually play chess. Secondly, there are so many beautiful girls in chess."

Caoili made news six months ago after her saucy moves in a European nightclub sparked a fight between rival chess champions.  "I was dancing unprovocatively," she said yesterday.  "People claimed it was sexy salsa. It was actually a pub song and we were jumping around."

Caoili's grand final dance-off against footballer Anthony Koutoufides airs on Channel 7 on Tuesday.
