News About Women in Chess

I only report on tournaments where at least one female played.  If it's men only playing, it doesn't get reported here.  If I'm not sure a named player is male or female, I leave the name out, so on occasion I may omit a chess femme

56th Bulgarian Women's Championship
March 10 - 20, 2007

(The following historical background information provided by Correspondent Wayne Mendryk:  The town of Pernik is the capital of the province of Pernik, and in southwestern Bulgaria. (The population of the city is 86133, and the city is situated 710 metres above sea level) It is the second-largest town in southwestern Bulgaria (Sofia is the largest). Pernik is situated in the high Pernik Plain between Vitosha, Lyulin and Golo Burdo Mountains, along the Strouma River. The town is 30 km to the southwest of Sofia. In the 9th century the small Slav settlement of ancient history became part of Danubian Bulgaria. It was named Pernik (Perunik, Perinik) probably at its establishment. The town was turned into a strategic medieval centre and the 4.5 m thick fortress walls kept back the Byzantine invasions towards Sredets (Sofia) and Northwestern Bulgaria. The fortress withstood seige twice – in 1004 and in 1016. The local boyar Krakra Pernishki (from Pernik) led the defence. Already under Byzantine domination the fortress survived a devastating earthquake in the middle of 11th century. It was restored and expanded and existed till 1189 when it was destroyed and set to fire by the Serbian joupan Stefan Neman. Because of the numerous raids of kurdzhalii (Turkish brigands) during the Ottoman rule Pernik was a small, scattered cattlebreeding village. It numbered barely 1000 people in 1879. After the liberation the settlement developed as a mining village. In 1891 Pernik coal mining region was declared state property (first in Bulgaria) and the village became main energy centre of developing Bulgaria. The most popular legend about the origin of the name of Pernik is that it comes from the name of the ancient Slavic God Perun.

Jan, it was interesting for me to discover that in Slavic mythology, Perun (with many spelling and pronunciation variants among modern Slavic languages) is the highest god of the Pantheon and the god of thunder and lightning.  His other attributes were the mountain, oak, eagle, firmament (In Indo-European languages, this was joined with the notion of the sky of stone), horses, carts, weapons (the hammer, axe and arrow), war and fire. He was first associated with weapons made of stone and later with those of metal.  As early as the sixth century, he was mentioned in De Bello Gothico, a historical source written by the Byzantine historian Procopius. The etymology of the word reveals that Perun is strongly correlated with the near-identical Perkunas/Perkons from Baltic mythology, suggesting the existence of an ancestral Balto-Slavic deity, which ultimately derives from the Proto-Indo European thunder god, whose original name has been reconstructed as "Perkunos." The root The root *perkwu originally probably meant oak, but in Proto-Slavic this evolved into per - meaning "to strike, to slay." Similar to Perkunas of Baltic mythology, Perun was considered to have multiple aspects. In one Baltic song, it is said there are, in fact, nine versions of Perkunas. Remains of an ancient shrine to Perun discovered beneath medieval Peryn skete in Novgorod, consisted of a wide circular platform centred around a statue, encircled by a trench with eight apses, which contained sacrificial altars and possibly additional statues."

Wayne, thanks for that fascinating report.  Because of the Indo-European connection, I've no doubt this god has "brothers" throughout Europe, England and Scotland and I wouldn't be surprised if he also has connections to one or more ancient board games that led to to the development of chess.
