This was a giant event - 608 players in the Open.  Looking at the photographs of the 2006 event at the official website made me feel claustrophobic.  How can the players concentrate when they are in such close quarters, banging elbows, basically, with people on either side of them at long tables?  Talk about claustrophobia!  

(as reported by Correspondent Wayne Mendryk) Norms were earned by the following players:  WIM - Mihaela Sandu (ROM 2207); WGM - WIM Vita Chulivska (UKR 2208); WIM - Arlette Van Weersel (NED 2165); IM - WGM Eva Repkova (SVK 2328).  
The winner of this extremely competitive tournament was GM Yue Wang of China elo 2644 Wang (on a tie-break over 5 other players!) . Wang is the highest rated player in China and the 63rd highest-rated player in the world . Woman Grandmaster Elina Danielian was the top-scoring woman in this event with a score of 6.5 points (she finished in 32nd place after tie-breaks). Here are the scores and placings of the top-scoring women participants (after tie-breaks): Oksana Vozovic 132nd place (5.5 points), Julia Kochetkova 133rd place (5.5 points),Anna Zozulia 140th place (5.5 points), Cristina Foiser 142nd place 5.5 points, Petra Schuurman 150th place 5.5 points, Eva Repkova 157th place 5.5 points. 64 females participated in this tournament (11% of the participants were female).  Elina Danielian holds the Woman Grandmaster title and Men's International Master title, and her elo rating is 2426. She was born in 1978 and is the second highest rated woman player in Armenia and the 29th highest rated player in Armenia.
