Chess Femme News by Goddesschess

News About Women in Chess

I only report on tournaments where at least one female played.  If it's men only playing, it doesn't get reported here (usually, but on occasion I make exceptions :)  If I'm not sure a named player is male or female, I leave the name out, so on occasion I may omit a chess femme, mea culpa!  Jan Newton

Who is Alla B. Grinfeld?  I've never heard of her!  She's 55 or 56 years old - just a few years
younger than I am.  Wow.  A new émigré?

Judit Polgar has dropped WAY out of the 2700+ club.  Gone are the days when she consistently in the top ten players of the world.  The torch is being passed to a younger generation of female chessplayers, but there is a huge performance gap remaining in the ELOs of the top-ranked females versus the top-ranked males.  Will it ever be closed?  I think it can - but it would entail an enormous amount of sacrifice on the part of the female players and, in the end, I think we're just too damned practical to waste so much time when there are so many other things to do with one's life!

USA's female players have a long way to go to catch up to the top ten females in the world ELO wise.  Practically speaking, though, Goletiani and Zatonskih are both mothers with very young children.  Their time devoted to progressing in chess will be limited.  IM Irina Krush - I thought I read somewhere recently that she is married now, too.  Will she defer motherhood and if so, for how long? The other younger ladies in the USA top-10 are busy with school and/or college careers and, with the way of the world, may then look toward matrimony and establishing families of their own.  That leaves Camille Baginskaite and Alla Grinfeld.  Don't quote me on this - I believe Baginskaite is married to GM Larry Christiansen. Alla Grinfeld - her last FIDE rated games were from July 10, 2008 Individual Swiss Open Championship, where she scored very well, 6/9.  She hasn't played a rated game since then.
