Humpy wins title

HYDERABAD: Koneru Humpy won the HSG Open international chess tournament in Hilversum (the Netherlands) with 7.5 points from nine rounds, according to information received here on Thursday.

Incidentally, this is the first ever international title-triumph for the ONGC officer in the men's circuit.

In the final round, Humpy (Elo 2575) outwitted GM Erik Van Den Doel of the Netherlands (Elo 2580). By virtue of this victory, the Vijayawada girl will pick up 15 FIDE points.

Earlier, Humpy moved closer to the title by drawing the eighth and penultimate round against Greek GM Stelios Halkias to maintain her half point lead on Wednesday.

Next up for Humpy is the Kaupthing Open (July 7 to 14) at Differdange (Luxembourg).  If Humpy does pick up 15 ELO points from this win, and assuming she does okay at Kaupthing and any subsequent events she's scheduled to play in for the next quarter, her rating should go up to at least 2600.  That will make her the second highest rated female player in the world, behind only Judit Polgar.

Hola darlings!  A short while ago I wrote an article for Goddesschess on a woman chessplayer by the name of Alina Markowski.  Ms. Markowski retired from active tournament play 2 years ago, at the age of 95.  She is now 97 and still going strong according to a recent email I received from a friend of hers who has known her since 1975.  Ms. Markowski never earned a "title" or made any top 10 player lists, but this extraordinary lady has touched the lives of thousands of chessplayers and worked tirelessly to make things better for chessplayers.  Please read the article about her - not because I wrote it, but because Ms. Markowski deserves all of our praise and honor.  She is truly an extraordinary Chess Goddess.  I posted about Ms. Markowski at the Goddesschess blog.  Please feel free to post a comment - I've been advised that Ms. Markowski got a kick out of being named a "Chess Goddess."

My heart was broken for awhile when Judit Polgar didn't make it through to the second half of the Candidates' Matches, but chess and life go on, and so I have to update the news!  I've been acting like the Candidates' Matches and the recently-concluded Women's Team World Chess Championship were the only events taking place - not so, mon amies!  And so I valiantly push forward (ahem).  Okay, enough mush, here's the news!

World Chess Championship Candidates' Matches
May 27 - June 14, 2007
Elista, Russia

As everyone knows by now, it's official, Judit didn't make it into the second half of the Candidates' Matches.  I watched the game online Saturday from 8:00 a.m. my time until 9:56 a.m. when I didn't think there was a chance that Judit could pull out a win - I had a lot of work to do around this place; but as I was outside cutting the grass in the backyard I kept hoping that somehow she could do it.  Later in the day I checked Susan Polgar's blog and saw that Judit and Bareev had a draw, which is all he needed to move forward.  Congratulations to Bareev and the others who advanced, especially Alexi Shirov, one of my favorite players, and for Judit, I look forward to watching her in whatever her next event is.  Here is her final game in PGN:

World Chess Championship Candidates' Matches
May 27 - June 14, 2007
Elista, Russia

Unfortunately I believe Judit is going home today.  Bareev just made time control.  Judit's game looked very promising earlier, I'm not sure exactly what happened but I don't think she can pull out a win at this point; if anything, it's a draw and that's not good enough.  I'm time-stamping this 9:56 a.m.

Judit wins game 5 against Bareev!  She gets to go one more day in another do-or-die game.  If she doesn't win behind the black pieces tomorrow, she's gone from this event.  She needs to win in order to force a tie-break!  May the Chess Goddess be with Judit tomorrow.  (Photo from Susan Polgar's blog, where Susan did a running analysis of Judit's game as it was being played).  Here's game 5 in PGN:
