News About Women in Chess

I only report on tournaments where at least one female played.  If it's men only playing, it doesn't get reported here.  If I'm not sure a named player is male or female, I leave the name out, so on occasion I may omit a chess femme.

June, 2006
:

June 28, 2006: My friend in the north, Wayne Mendryk, who was of invaluable assistance in reporting the news when Chess Goddesses was online, has agreed once again to be a correspondent reporting chess femme news!  He's already on the job, reporting that Judit Polgar will be competing in the Essent Tournament to be held October 20-28, 2006.

June 27, 2006:  Darlings, I have gossip!  Of course, it's old gossip, but it's news to me, since I generally stopped visiting chess news sites after I gave up the Chess Goddesses website back in August, 2004.  Anyway, here I am back in it and today when I was reading around the various chess news sites for potential chess femme news, I discovered at the British Chess Magazine that Judit Polgar is expecting her second child - and is evidently quite far along!  Well, knock me off my chair.  Of course, such things do happen to a young married woman!  Congrats to Judit and Gustav.  The BCM copyrighted pic of Judit (left) shows her looking absolutely beautiful, with her hair simply but elegantly pulled back from her face, dressed in a white suit.  The BCM article noted Judit's "advanced pregnancy", but you'd never be able to tell it from the photo.

Midnight Sun Chess Challenge: June 24 - July 4, 2006, 9 Rounds, 62 players.  Sponsored by Tromsų Chess Club, Norway.  First place is worth 3,000 Euros. The event was won by GM Sergei Shipov (RUS 2576) with 7.5/9.  IM Joanna Dworakowska (POL 2364) finished in 9th place, with 6.0.  There were a couple of players with a first or middle name of "Inge," but I wasn't sure if they're femmes, so I did not include them in this final results list:  54. Edakina, Anastasia RUS, 3.0; 59. Edakina, Maria RUS, 2/5 (my guess is that these two players are sisters).

White Nights Chess Tournament: June 22 - July 1, 2006, 9 rounds, 114 players.  The official site is in Cyrillic script so I took my results directly from TWIC.  The event was won by Dmitry Egorov (RUS 2215) with 7.0/9.  The only chess femme finisher in the top results as reported at TWIC is  WF Ekaterina Akatova (RUS 2159), who finished in 23rd place with 5.5.

5th Grenoble Masters:  June 22-30, 2006
IM Cristina Adela Foisor (ROM 2392) was the only woman competing in this event and finished in a respectable 4th place with 4.5/9.  The event was won by IM Timor Asanov (RUS 2381) with 7.0/9.

2nd Mielenska Perla Baltiku: June 20 - 29, 2006, 10 rounds, 21 players, was won by GM Vladimir P. Malaniuk (UKR 2539) with 9.0/10.  Chess femmes who participated and their final results: 7.  WIM Joanna Majdan (POL 2297), 4.0; 8. WFM Klaudia Kulon (POL 2077), 4.0; 13. WIM Svetlana Cherednichenko (UKR 2238), 3.0; 18.  k Maria Gociniak (what the hell does "k" mean?) (POL 2034), 2.0.

XXIV Balaton International Chess Festival:  June 17-25, 2006
Report is only on the "Open" (70 players).  "F" Laszlo Gonda (what does "F" stand for?) (HUN 2465) won the Open with 7.5/9.  Here are the results of the chess femmes who participated in the Open:  (37) Porat, Maya ISR 1984, 4/5; (40) Horvath, Julia wm HUN 2261, 4.5; (49) Kozma, Edit wf HUN 2103, 4.0.

1st Open Teplice: June 17 - 24, 2006, 9 rounds, 36 players.  Marie Bazantova (CZE 2148) participated in this event and finished in 11th place with 5.5.  The event was won by GM Marek Vokac (CZE 2455) with 7.0/9.

Dutch Women's Championship:  June 16 - June 29, 2006, 11 Rounds.  Wayne Mendryk reports that the Dutch Women's Championship just finished; Peng Zhaoqin won all but one game and took the championship with an unbelievable score of  8.5/9! That was 1.5 points ahead of number two Bianca Muhren and 2.5 better than Tea Lanchava.  Full final standings and results later.
