News About Women in Chess

I only report on tournaments where at least one female played.  If I'm not sure a named player is male or female, I may leave the name out or include it, so on occasion I may omit a woman player from the results or include a man player in error.

July, 2007:

Updated August 19, 2007:

U.S. Open
July 28 - August 5, 2007
IM Jennifer Shahade is pulling things together over at the USCF website.  She has featured a number of excellent articles of late and there is every promise of more to follow.  Well done, Jen!  There was a nice feature about Alisa Melekhina's performance at the U.S. Open, hot on her very creditable performance at the U.S. Women's Championship.   Alisa finished with 6.0/9.

GM Boris Gulko won the event on tie-break with 7.5 - congrats to the veteran, who beat out six other players all with 7.5!  Probably the surprise of the tournament was Abby Marshall (USA 2038), who was ranked 101st and finished in 15th place with 7.0/8 (she finished with 7.0 with 10 other players, including Hikaru Nakamura, who finished in 8th place with 7.0/9).  Who is Abby Marshall?  She's one of a crop of young female players who is becoming a star playing in various Susan Polgar-sponsored tournaments.  Born in 1991, Abby won the 2006 Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls (she also won the 2005 event). This is an INCREDIBLE finish for Abby - and I cannot believe her performance didn't get more press.  Yes, I like Melekhina but by comparison, she finished in 36th place with 6.0.  WOW!

Jovanka Houska's new book
I normally don't highlight book reviews here, but Licenser over at Chessville recommended this one - and of course I see why - it's by IM Jovanka Houska!  check out "Play the Caro-Kahn", reviewed by Kreider!

Good Press for Humpy
Dylan McClain at the New York Times wrote this article (July 22, 2007):

A nagging question over the years has been: Why aren’t there more good players who are women?

Since the World Chess Federation began ranking players more than 40 years ago, only one, Judit Polgar of Hungary, has been in the top 100.

Some men, notably Garry Kasparov, the former champion, have suggested that women do not have the psychological makeup (meaning aggressiveness) or intellectual capacity to play high-level chess.

Late last year, a study in Psychological Science concluded that that was not necessarily true. It said a likely reason for the dearth of good women players was that not enough of them played competitive chess.

The study was by Christopher F. Chabris, a research associate in the psychology department at Harvard, and Mark E. Glickman, an associate professor of health policy and management at Boston University.

“If you look at boys and girls who started at roughly the same playing strength,” Professor Glickman said, “if you look at them at the start and follow them over time, there tends not to be a difference.”

Still, it is puzzling that Polgar has stood alone for so long. At long last, however, she may be about to get some help in the battle of the sexes.

Humpy Koneru, a 20-year-old from India, may be poised to break into the elite ranks. She is now the No. 2 woman in the world, one of just 10 to earn the title of grandmaster, which she did at 15 years 2 months, three months younger than Polgar was when she earned the title. Over the last 18 months, she has played a number of strong tournaments against men, including the second section of the elite Corus tournament in 2006, with good results.

Two weeks ago, in a field with 13 grandmasters, she tied for first at the Kaupthing Open in Luxembourg with Hannes Stefansson of Iceland. Going into the last round, she was in a six-way tie for first, but beat Sebastian Siebrecht of Germany. How’s that for lack of aggression?

After 3 Nf3, Siebrecht had a few options as Black, but steered the game into a Benoni opening, showing he was spoiling for a fight.

Koneru and Siebrecht showed that they knew recent theory, playing more than 20 moves that followed the course of recent games, in particular a 2001 encounter between Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov, which ended in a draw.

Siebrecht should have removed his king from in front of Koneru’s rook with 22 ... Kh8. Koneru’s 29 Rf1 was not the most accurate, as Siebrecht could have played 29 ... Qb2. Instead, 29 ... Qd5 opened the critical a2/g8 diagonal for White’s bishop.

Still, the position was not fatal. After 30 f5, Siebrecht could play 30 ... c4, when 31 Bc4 is met by 31 ... Rf5.

But 30 ... Ref7 was a critical error. Even after 31 ... Rf5 32 Rh4 Kg8 33 Rg1 Qb7 34 Bc3, Black is losing.

Siebrecht fell on his sword with 33... Be4 rather than play out a most likely hopeless position with 34 ... Qg2 35 Kg2 Bc2.

2007 MonRoi Women's Grande Prix Finale
July 22 - 28, 2007
Here is the official website for the Grande Prix Finale. There are eight women who made it to this finale: (1) IM Irina Krush (USA) (2) GM Pia Cramling (SWE) (she earned her GM ranking shortly after Susan Polgar did in the early 90's) (3) WGM Iweta Rajlich (POL) (4) WGM Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant (GEO) (5) WGM Jovanka Houska (ENG) (5) WGM Lela Javakhishvili (GEO) (7) WGM Cristina Adela Foisor and (8) Myriam Roy (CAN).

First prize is $4,500 plus a diamond-studded watch - too modern for my old-fashioned taste but a girl can never have too many diamonds. All hotel and transportation expenses for the players are being paid by the event sponsors. Nice! "Sofia" rules are in effect - no draws for the first 40 moves, so the players will be earning their pay.

No offense against Krush, but Pia Cramling has always been one of my favorite players so I'm rooting for her to win this event!

Updated August 1, 2007:
Yaaahhh!  Pia Cramling won the event outright with 5.0/7.  Here are the final standings: 1. Cramling, Pia g SWE 2533 5.0; 2. Houska, Jovanka m ENG 2401 4.5; 3. Javakhishvili, Lela m GEO 2460 4.5; 4. Swedish Championship
June 30 - July 15, 2007
Ongoing.  GM Pia Cramling is competing, she's better than 50% right now with 4.5/8.  The leader at the moment (five more games to go) is GM Tiger Hillarp Persson (SWE 2552) 6.5/8.

IM Antwerp
June 30 - July 8, 2007

Designed for IM norms to be earned, the 10-round round robin was won by GM Evgenij Miroshnichenko (UKR 2646) with 7.5/9.  One chess femme participated in the event, WGM Bianca Muhren (NED 2311), who finished in 9th place with 3.0.

World Open
June 30 - July 4, 2007

Nobody got the big "first prize" of $30,000 that was dangled for winning the Open outright. Instead, eight players who finished with 6.5/9 each received $5,102.12 for their efforts and Akobian, who was the winner against Stripunsky after an "Armegeddon play-off," got a little extra - $5,468.12. Whoopdedoo, folks. The guys who won in some of the lower rated sections did better cash wise.

For the record, here are the winners and the chess femmes who participated in Open and top sections. I also noted what the winner of these sections took home $$$ wise and whether any of the chess femmes won $$$.

Five women who will be playing in the 2007 U.S. Women’s Chess Championship also played in this event – they are highlighted in bold.
