Koneru Wins Award
(Added 021907)

The Delhichess website reports that GM Koneru Humpy (IND 2567) was awarded the prestigious Padmashree Award on the Republic Day this year.  Congratulations to KH, I've watched her grow up since I started following women's chess in 1999.  She is currently the second rated female player in the world and currently number 252 on the full ratings list (men and women combined).  This is a very nice photo of KH (from the FIDE website).  At 20 years of age, I hope she has a long, prestigious and lucrative chess career ahead of her!

12th HIT Open
January 26 - February 1, 2007

Report from Correspondent Wayne Mendryk on February 14, 2007:
IM (WGM) Alisa Maric survived horrible car accident on 25th January in Belgrade. Only two days later, she was awarded with prestigious Svetosavska medal of Republic of Serbia for her fantastic achievements in education and sport. Being forced to stay in bed for the next 4-6 weeks, she had to watch the ceremony on TV.
"I was looking forward to this event and I felt down-hearted for not being able to attend it" - Alisa said - "Many people have called to express their support and wish me fast recovery. I want to thank them all"
"I am not used to rest, particularly not so extentive. For now, I'm only reading, but in few days I will start with chess preparation. It won't be easy to do it in the bed, but at least I am capable to work with laptop."
Alisa was planning to join MonRoi International Woman's Grand-Prix, if everything goes well, she might start with ECU Individual Championship in Dresden.
We wish you full and speedy recovery, Alisa!

Kiev Championship
January 20 - 30, 2007

39 players, 11 rounds.  The event was won by IM Vadim Shishkin (UKR 2474), with 10.0.  Impressive.  Chess femme participants:  (24) Viktoria Bidkova (UKR 2017), 5.0; (26) V. Moliboga (RUS 2277), 5.0 (I'm guessing that V. Moliboga is a female, if not, sorry!); (27) WGM Lidia K. Semenova (UKR 2270), 5.0.

23rd Geneva Internationa
January 20 - 28, 2007

100 players participated in the Open.  Unfortunately, the official site only listed names of the players by first initial and last name, so I was not able to determine who was a chess femme, and who was not (no clues were afforded by other means, such as helpful WIM ranking, etc.)  So, this report is from TWIC, and there was one lone chess femme who scored high enough to be reported on there.  The Open was won by GM Christian Bauer (FRA 2609), with  7.0; IM Anna Zozulia (UKR 2350) finished in 17th place ( out of 100 players) with 5.5.

Estonian Women's Championship
January 20 - 27, 2007

No chess femmes participated in the "Championship" (that is, the "men's" event).  A separate women's event was held.  Congratulations to all these intrepid chess femmes.  Here is the final cross-table:

Marienbad Chess Festival
January 19 - 29, 2007

There were GM, IM, Open, Rapid and Blitz Tournaments.  Whew!
In the "GM" Event, one of the 12 participants was a chess femme.  The event was won by IM Emil Hermansson (SWE) with 7.0/11.  WGM Jolanta Zawadzka (POL) finished in 12th place with 4.0.

In the "IM" Event, there was also one female of the 12 participants.  The event was won by FM Maximilian Meinhart (GER) with 7.5/11; WIM Petra Blazkova (CZE) finished in 10th place with 5.0.

The Open had 158 players.  The event was won by FM Bernd Baum (GER 2179) with 7.5/9.  Chess femmes who participated, and their finishes:  (75) Katarzyna Radziewicz (POL 1966), 4.5; (86) Anna Iwanow (POL 1889), 4.5; (95) Isabel Katte (GERM 1927), 4.0; (125) Gabriela Cazacu (MDA 1554), 3.5; (134) Urszula Grochocinska (POL 1850), 3.0; (148) Aleksandra Dadello (POL 1700), 2.5; (151) Angelina Kukushkina (RUS 1850), 2.5; (155) Anastasia Ponomarchuk (RUS 1700), 2.0.

German Championships
January 19 - 27, 2007

Bad Koenigshofen
The official website is in German and therefore indecipherable to me but, as far as I can tell, there was no separate Women's Championship.  Sad.  40 players.  The event was won by GM Arkadij Naiditsch (2663) with 7.0 (on tie-break).  There was one chess femme who participated:  IM Ketino Kachiani-Gersinska (2374), who finished a respectable 19th place with 4.5.

61st Armenian Women's Championship
January 16 -26, 2007
No women played in the "Championship" - that is, with the men.  The women were shuttled off into their own tournament and the website doesn't give much coverage.  Andriasian and Agabekian finished the 9th round tied at 8.0, and had a two game play-off, from which Andriasian emerged the winner with 2.0. Final Standings:  S. Andriasian (2278), 10.0 (winning play-off); Agabekian (2211), 8.0; L. Galojan (2286), 7.0; N. Aginian (2297), 5.5; N. Gasparian (2228), 4.5; N. Darbinian (2166), 4.5; A. Kharatian (2186), 4.5; A. Darbinian (2143), 3.0; L. Alaverdian (2130), 3.0; M. Gasparian (2248), 2.0.

Corus ( Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands)
January 13 -28, 2007
The fabulous Corus Tournament arrives every year with comforting predictability.  Also predictable, especially during the past five or so years, is that at least one chess femme appears in the B and C Tournaments.

In the "B" Tournament (Cat. XIV 2600), the lone chess femme IM Tatiana Kosintseva (RUS 2474) finished in 13th place with 4.0/13.  The B Tournament was won by GM Pavel Eljanov (UKR 2675), 9.0.

In the "C" Tournament (Cat. X 2486), there were three chess femmes playing.  WF Hou Yifan (CHN 2509) finished in 5th place with 7.0/13; IM Nadezhda Kosintseva (RUS 2496) finished in 10th place with 5.5; and GM Peng Zhaoqin (NED 2431) finished in 11th place with 5.5.  The C event was won by GM Michal Kransenkow (POL 2651), 10.5.

VS Arhipov Memorial (added March 20, 2007)
January 9 - 17, 2007
The event was won by GM Alexei Bezgodov (RUS 2552) with 6.0/9.  The only woman in the event, IM Lilit Mkrtchian (ARM 2458), finished in 9th place with 2.5. The legend, GM Viktor Korchnoi (SUI 2629), finished with 4.5 in 7th place.

XXXII Abierto Internacional "Ciudad de Sevilla"
January 7 - 15, 2007
This 228 player event was won (on tie-break) by GM Karel Van Der Weide (NED 2476) who finished tied at 7.5/9 with GM Daniel Campora Sivori (ARG 2510).  Top chess femme finishers were (17) WFM Claudia Robles Garcia (ESP 2089), 6.5; (25) IM Tatiana Kononenko (UKR 2379), 6.5; (40) Marta Romero Lopez (ESP 1973); (50) WFM Margarida Coimbra (POR 2061), 5.5; (134) Amalia Aranaz Murillo (ESP 1672), 4.0; (143) Cristina Romero Lopez (ESP 1564), 4.0; (170) Santia Maza Lopez De Los Mozos (ESP 2060), 3.0; (186) Maria Moncada Rios (ESP UNR), 3.0; and (205) Sara Ales Bolaños (ESP UNR), 2.0.

Francesc Alsina Memorial
January 7, 2007
Evidently this was a rapid chess event with 54 players, won by IM Elisabeth Paehtz (GER 2451), 7.5/8; the only other chess femme I could identify finished in 11th place, WIM Karen Zapata (PER 2197), with 5.0.

The Paul Keres Memoria
January 6 - 12, 2007
There were A and B Groups and a WGM Tournament.  No chess femmes participated in the A event.  In the B Group, Cat. VI (2377), the event was won by GM Meelis Kanep (EST 2504), 6.5/9; the lone chess femme in the B Group, 6. WGM Laura Rogule (LAT 2329), finished in 6th place (out of 10) with 4.5/9.  Here are the final standings for the WGM Tournament:

January 3 -11, 2007
Peterhof, Russia
There were three events:  a cat. VII (2401) in which no chess femmes participated; a cat. II (2276), in which one chess femme participated, and an Open with 32 players.  The cat. II event was won by 1. F Evgeny A. Levin (RUS 2393), 7.5/10; Elizabeth Borisova (RUS 2252) finished in a fantastic third place with 7.0/10.  Unfortunately, the official website is in Cyrillic and I can't figure it out - sorry.  So, I can only report from the TWIC report, that the Open was won by F Alex Malofeev (RUS 2277), with 7.0 and Nadezda Somova (LAT 1931) finished in 8th place with 5.5.

The A Tournament (42 players) was won by IM Mihajlo Stojanovic (SER 2576), 6.0/7; (32) Andrea Stella (ITA 2084), 2.5.  The B Tournament (74 players) was won by Giuseppe Coratella (ITA 2251), 6.0; (5) Andrea La Manna (ITA 1895), 5.0; (6) WFM Marianna Chierici (ITA 1946), 5.0; (19) Giulia Tonel (ITA 1887), 4.0; (25) Marina Brunello (ITA 1910), 4.; (60) Robeta Brunello (ITA 1969), 2.5; (61) Giulia Di-Cerbo (ITA 1872), 2.5.  One lonely chess femme participated in the C Tournament (73 players), and Nadia Minardi (ITA 1343) finished in 73rd place with 1.0; that event was won by Gheorghe Panican (ITA 1530) with 6.0.

January 1 - 7, 2007

77 players participated in the "Meisteropen" Event, which was won by GM Vadim Malakhatko (UKR 2605), with 5.5/7.  WGM Anna Zozulia (UKR 2351) finished in 25th place with 4.0 and won a special prize (presumably for best showing by a chess femme).  One other chess femme participated in this event, (44) WIM Martine Dubois (FRA 2064), 3.5.
