OCF
Winter NAO FIDE Open
February 17 - 19, 2007
Stillwater, Oklahoma (USA)
As far as I know, there is no official website for this event, which had 111 players.
This report is compiled from information from TWIC and the USCF
website. IM Irina Krush, WGM Camila Baginskaite and Nadia Ortiz
tied for 1st-3rd for the women's prize, each earning 5.5/7 and $900.
The event was won by GM Valeriy Aveskulov (UKR 2517), with 6.0/7.
The top chess femmes reported at TWIC were: (2) IM Irina Krush
(USA 2449), 5.5; (7) WIM Nadya Karolina Ortiz (COL 2291), 5.5; (8) WGM
Camilla Baginskaite (USA 2317), 5.5; (11) WF Zorigt Bayaraa (MGL 2151),
5.0; (13) WF Tatev Abrahamyan (USA 2295), 5.0; (15) WF Iryna Zenyuk (USA
2176), 5.0; (17) WF Elizabeth Vicary Elizabeth (USA 2133), 4.5; and (18)
Tatia Vayserberg (USA 2037), 4.5.
There is a report
on this event at the USCF website by WFM Elizabeth Vicary - it's
undated (pet peeve: I don't like reading undated reports, it could be
years old and I might not know it!) Extracted from Vicary's
report:
(Photo,
left: future World Champion: USA's Becky Huang). "The
tournament organizer, Frank Berry, offered any FIDE rated woman free
entry, hotel, transportation from the airport in Tulsa (70 miles!), and
a $500 appearance fee. There was even a separate $4,500 prize fund for
women that exceeded the overall prize fund. This seemed absolutely
incredible to me, and something I would be crazy to turn down.
Apparently, IM Irina Krush, WGM Camilla Baginskaite, WIM Nadia Ortiz,
WIM Batchimeg Tuvshintugs, WIM Alexey Root, WFM Bayaraa Zorigt, WFM
Tatev Abrahamyan, WFM Iryna Zenyuk, WFM Lilia Doibani, WCM Judit Simo,
Tatiana Vayserberg, Vanessa West, Simone Sobel, Becky Huang, Stephanie
Ballom, Sarah Chiang, Courtney Jamison, Stephanie Pitcher, Helen
Jamison, Sylvia Yang, and Alexa Zolman all felt the same way! ...
Gee, this is real cute: "GM
Pascal Charbonneau suggested the conditions policy was a smart
move—'You offer conditions to the women, so they come, and then the
grandmasters come just to see the women!' I asked Frank if he thought
some of the male players had shown up for this reason and he agreed
'Sure, at least, say, 15 of them played out of curiosity.'"
Well, boys will be boys.

Magistral
I and II Necochea Tournaments
February 14 - 25, 2007
(Nechocha, Argentina)
There were two all-play-all back-to-back events - whew! Some of
the players switched out, but not this one chess femme: WIM Marisa
Zuriel (ARG 2197). Alas, she didn't do too well, finishing in last
place in both events with 2.5/9 both times. The winner of Magistral I (cat.
III (2325)) was Leonardo Tristan (ARG 2317) with 6.0/9. Magistral
II (cat. II (2294)) was won by IM Jose Fernandez Cubas (PAR 2414), with
7.0/9.
Aeroflot
Open
February 14 - 20, 2007
Correspondent Wayne Mendryk did an opening report on February 14 (see
below). I have the final standings for all the women players on a
separate page here, there
were so many to report! Wayne reports that both Tatiana and
Nadezhdza Kosintseva are law students at Pomar University ( Archangelsk).
None of the ladies who participated in
the A1 Group (ELO higher than 2549, but some of the women got a free
pass because they would not have qualified otherwise) placed in the
money, and one of my favorite players, IM V. Subbaraman (IND 2459),
finished in last place in the A1 Group with 2.0. In the A2 Group (ELO
2400-2549), IM Alisa Galliamova (RUS 2470) won $650 (all prizes in U.S.
dollars) and IM Anna Ushenina won $450. In the B Group (ELO
2199-2399), WGM Zeinab Mamedjarova (AZE 2307) won $700, WGM Julia
Kochetkova (RUS 2332) won $500, and IM Irina Vasilevich (RUS 2353) won
$300. The C Group (below 2200) was won outright by WFM Gulmira
Dauletova (KAZ 2170) for a prize of $3,000!!! Other money winders
in the C Group were WFM Nazi Paikidze (GEO 2167), $450, Amrutha Mokal (IND
2137), $250, Soumya Swaminathan (IND 2140), $200, and WFM Sengeravdan
Otgonjargal (MGL 2154), $200. Congratulations to all of the women
who played in this grand event. I'm not used to seeing so many
women's names on the player lists!
