Rilton Cup
December 27 - January 5, 2007

One of the first of the female GMs from the 1980's, GM Pia Cramling (SWE 2528), participated in this event.  Pia's fans the world over have steadfast devotion to this wonderful lady, who took several years off from chess to raise a family and then jumped back into the fray.  I pay attention when Cramling plays.  In this 133 player event, Pia finished a respectable 10th place with 6.5.  The event was won by GM Robert Fontaine (FRA 2557) with 7.5. Other chess femmes who participated and their final standing: (30) Sammalvuo, Niina (FIN 2259) wgm,  5.5; (37) Agrest, Inna (SWE 1973), 5.5; (50) Hansen, Evgenia (DEN 2173) wim, 5.0; (69) Horn, Emilia (SWE 2081), 4.5; (93) Savola, Laura (FIN 1965), 4.0; (101) Sevkan Akdag, Dara (DEN 1984), 3.5; and (111) Gras, Delphine (FRA 1976), 3.0.

1st Christmas Open Hotel "Bern"
December 26 - 30, 2006

Sinisa Joksic reports:  Swiss system, 7 rounds, 87 players, from 12 nations, 7 GMs, 5 IMs.  There is no separate website reported for this event, I got the news from TWIC.  WM Barbara Jaracz (POL 2267) finished in 15th place with 4.5, and also won a special prize for "best lady" player.

16th North American Open
December 26 - 29, 2006
The Open Section (78 players) was won by GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA 2707) with 6.0/7, for a measly prize of $6,940.  I sure hope he got free room and board.  As far as I can tell from the list, only two chess femmes participated in the Open Section and they didn't do too well:  (55) WFM Tatev Abrahamyan (USA 2303), 2.5; (76) Jennifer T. Acon (USA 1806), 1.0.

Matches in Astana
December 18 - 20, 2006

I rarely see GM Maia Chiburdanidze in the news these days, so it was a pleasure to come across this event in which she participated (played against another woman).  Chiburdanidze was one of the female trailblazers back in the '80's when a strong group of female players including Susan Polgar and Pia Cramling were making names for themselves by participating in "men's" events and earning GM titles - that's GM, not WGM.

The official website is in Mexican/Spanish.  I can't read the language but I can read the names and final cross-tables and the person who put the website together helpfully indicated the sex of the players as "F" or "M."  I wish they all would do that, it would make this job so much easier!

Koneru Humpy took the Gold Medal in the Individual Women's Rapidchess event. It appears strict separation of the sexes was the norm in the rapid-chess events.  Here are the final standings (from TWIC) in this event:

Koneru also helped India's "Mixed Team (Classical)" to a Gold Medal. Darlings, I haven't visited the official website for the Asian Games (I suppose I should); it appears, looking over the final standings of this event at TWIC, that at least one of the players on each Team had to be a female.  That India beat China in this event - wow, I think that's outstanding given the number of strong players (male and female) China has fielded in recent years.

Reported December 4, 2006
Here is an article reporting on her victory from the International Herald Tribune:

DOHA, Qatar: Koneru Humpy claimed India's first gold medal of the 2006 Asian Games with a win in the women's rapid format chess competition.

Humpy, 19, defeated Kazakhstan's Dana Aketayeva in the ninth round of the rapid Swiss format to finish with eight points.

The silver medal went to China's Zhao Xue, who defeated Indonesian Irine Sukandar in the last round, but finished half a point behind Humpy. Qatar's Chen Zhu got the bronze.

The men's singles gold went to Kazakhstan grandmaster Murtas Kazhgalevey, whose final-round victory over Indian grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran took him to 7.5 points — half a point clear of Vietnam's Thien Hai Dao and Bu Xiangzhi of China.

Chess is making its debut in the Asian Games, the first time the game has become a medal sport in a multiple-sport event.

The singles events were played on the rapid format, but the players will return to the classic format for the team competition. The team event will feature mixed teams comprising at least one woman out of three players.

Stung by a loss Sunday to Zhao Xue, Humpy won all three of her matches Monday to stay on top of the women's table.

"I'm delighted, my aim was to win the gold and I was confident of getting it," Humpy said.

This victory is very important to me, chess is becoming an important sport in India," said Humpy, who earlier this year won the World junior championship and also became the youngest player ever to clinch the British women's chess championship.

"I've got a lot of ambitions, I want to win the world championship and start competing in men's tournaments."

Coached by her father, she began playing chess when she was five. Her collection of honors started with a title in the world under-10 championships in 1997. (END)
