vicary_elizabeth_edmonton_open_2008.jpg (24609 bytes)
25 players in the International Open.  The event was won by GM Alexander Moiseenko (UKR 2632) with 7.0/9.  Chess femmes who participated and their final standings:
(22) WFM Elizabeth Vicary (USA 2145) (photo, right), 4.5 and (23) WFM Tamara Bolvary (HUN 2046), 0.0.
These standings seem rather strange to me, because there were two players below Bolvary who actually scored points.

Southwest Chess Club Championship
August 7 - 8, 2008
I have sort of "adopted" the SWCC, as it is not far as the crow flies from where I live and it has a dedicated and active group of participants and supporters, and it makes me happy to see a local thriving club.  Allen Becker, who is #17 on the Wisconsin Active Players list, sent me an email with information about the results of the Championship, which I published tonight at the blog.  Here are the final results:

I noted with interest the names of several local chess femmes: Joanna Huang, who finished in 18th place with 3.5; Alena Huang, who finished in 23rd place with 3.0; Claudia Schneider, who finished in 29th place with 2.5; Alice Zheng, who finished in 35th place with 2.0; Sabrina Huang, who finished in 40th place with 1.5, and to Ravina Sachdev who didn't win a game but played anyway!  Apologies to any chess femmes I missed - I checked names in the FIDE data base but in many instances could not find a match and the USCF data base does not list (M) or (F) after a player's name, so I often have no way to tell!

2008 Women's World Chess Championship
August 28 - September 19,  2008
Nalchik, Russia

Kirsan has struck again!  He really does demonstrate the truth of the old tale about the emperor and his clothes.  By analogy, Kirsan evidently thinks that everything is just rosy and no one is reading his vacuous pronouncements that steadfastly refuse to address THE REAL ISSUE raised by the Georgian women chessplayers - PERSONAL SAFETY - just like the Emperor was duped into believing that he was wearing such resplendant robes that he just had to parade before all the people in them (hint: he was actually naked as the day he was born, having been duped by a cunning and devious tailor.)  Has Kirsan been duped by the cunning and devious Russian Chess Federation - or is he in cohoots with them???  Whatever the truth of that relationship may be, Kirsan is NAKED in front of all people following developments and, darlings, it's NOT a pretty sight.  Read the latest at my coverage of the 2008 WWCC.
