News About Women in Chess

I only report on tournaments where at least one female played.  If I'm not sure a named player is male or female, I may leave the name out or include it, so on occasion I may omit a woman player from the results or include a man player in error.

Mon Roi Women's Chess Grand Prix
Well, spank me!  I missed this announcement until today, and it's several months old!  Mon Roi is sponsoring a 2007 Women's Chess Grand Prix, and I think that's great. There are 7 participating tournaments this year; they hope to have 12 (one a month?) in 2008.  I had no idea the founder and CEO of MonRoi is Ms. Brana Malobabic-Giancristofaro.  Here's some info:

The Grand-Prix starts on January 23, 2007, in Gibraltar! The Grand-Prix Finale will be held in Montreal, Canada July 21-28, 2007. Qualifiers will be selected on the basis of top performance and will compete for Finale prizes! Qualifying events are the following:

GibTelecom, Gibraltar , January 23 - February 1
Cannes Open, FRA, February 18-25
Zagreb Open, CRO, March 17-25
ECU Individual, Dresden GER, April 2-15
Liechtenstein Open, May 11-19
White Nights, St. Petersburg RUS, June 16-24
World Open, Philadelphia USA , June 28 - July 4
Montreal Chess Festival Finale, July 21-28

The Grand-Prix qualifier minimum requirements are as follows: 100 players, average rating of top 20 players 2400, 10 grandmasters and 5 titled woman participants. We were looking for the Open events, where all players have equal opportunity to participate. Tournaments with a successful track record were considered. Once the preliminary list of qualifiers was completed at the ECU Club Cup in Austria , we organized a seminar at the FIDE Training academy in Berlin . The organizers and arbiters had the opportunity to see the MonRoi system operating and get useful tips on the MonRoi ready tournament management.

The Foxwoods Open
April 6 - 8, 2007
The event was won by GM Gata Kamsky after a blitz play-off, with 7.0.  He won $10,000.  (I won't mention the 4/5 move draw he agreed to, tsk tsk).  The man deserves to have grandma's finger shaken under his nose!  Meanwhile, IM Irina Krush was actually playing chess, and finished in 10th place with 6.5, with several players also on 6.5 ahead of her.  She won $400 for her efforts.  I hope I'm misreading the prize structure and that all players who earned 7.0 shared a pot of combined prizes, and that all players who earned 6.5 did the same, although I don't know that would have resulted in much more of a pay-off for Krush (a $150 entry fee that is not charged to GMs and IMs upfront, will be deducted from her winnings according to the event rules!)

Irina Krush was not the only woman who participated in this event, there were some others (although, sadly, not many).  In the Open (131 players), here are the women and their final standings:  (62) WFM Iryna Zenyuk (2199), 4.5 - Zenyuk won a WIM norm with this performance; (102) WFM Tatev Abrahamyan (2289), 3.0; (112) Pamela F. Ruggiero (1952), 2.5; (120) Natasha Christiansen (1803), 2.0.

In the Under 2200 Section, 77 players: (won by Parker B. Zhao (2188) with 6.0) (16) Tatiana Vayserberg (2069), 4.5; (26) Esther Epstein (2180), 3.5; (30) Hana Itkis (2083), 3.5; (59), Jennie S. Liu (1843), 2.0.

In the Under 2000 Section, 94 players: (won by Geoffrey Herman (1937), 6.0) (10) Alena Kuzniatsova (1883), 5.0.
