Round 2 Games and
Play-off Results
September 3,
2008:
I only got one right - Dronavalli
goes through to Round 3. So much for my prognostication skills!
Here are the results of the Round
2 play-offs:
Game 1
Wenjun Ju - Antoaneta Stefanova 0-1
Nadezda Kosintseva - Viktoria Cmylite 1-0
Anna Muzychuk - Harika Dronavalli 1/2-1/2
Katherine Rohonyan - Inna Gaponenko 1/2-1/2
Elena Sedina - Nguyen Thi Thanh An 1-0
Game 2
Antoaneta Stefanova - Wenjun Ju 1-0
Viktoria Cmylite - Nadezda Kosintseva 1/2-1/2
Harika Dronavalli - Anna Muzychuk 1-0
Inna Gaponenko - Katherine Rohonyan 1-0
Nguyen Thi Thanh An - Elena Sedina 0-1
Here are the final 16:
IND Koneru, Humpy 2622
CHN Hou, Yifan 2557
BUL Stefanova, Antoaneta 2550
SWE Cramling, Pia 2544
RUS Kosintseva, Tatjana 2511
RUS Kosteniuk, Aleksandra 2510
CHN Ruan, Lufei 2499
HUN Hoang Thanh Trang 2487
UKR Ushenina, Anna 2476
UKR Gaponenko, Inna 2468
IND Harika, Dronavalli 2461
RUS Kosintseva, Nadezhda 2460
CHN Shen, Yang 2445
ARM Mkrtchian, Lilit 2436
RUS Matveeva, Svetlana2412
ITA Sedina, Elena 2344
I still say Sedina lucked out in
Round 1 when Krush did not appear. She doesn't belong in this
league. Now watch - she'll win the whole damn thing, LOL!
September 2,
2008:
Yesterday was Labor Day here in the USA and I
took the entire day off. I did no posting at the Goddesschess blog and did
no updating here. I did, however, fulfill my commitment to Chessville and
deliver a smashing (ahem, even if I do say so myself), column for September,
2008. It should be posted soon.
Okay darlings, so here are the results from the
first game held on September 1, 2008. My comments are in bold and
parentheses:

Stefanova, Antoaneta - Ju Wenjun 1/2
(unexpected)
Tan Zhongyi - Cramling, Pia 1/2 (unexpected)
Paehtz, Elisabeth - Ushenina, Anna 0-1

Sooooo - a lot of the high-powered favorites
are going to the play-offs tomorrow, where anything can happen - and does. This
knock-out format sucks, it really sucks big time.
Here are my predictions for who makes it
through out of the play-offs:
 | Ju Wenjun, who is grossly underrated
(probably on purpose, being held back by the Chinese as a sort of secret
weapon). She held Stefanova, who outranks her by over 150 ELO points,
to two draws. Stefanova, who was fresh from not having to play a
single game in Round 1 because her opponent did not appear.
|
 | Victoria Cmilyte and Nadezda Kotsinseva.
This is a tough one to call. Kotsinseva is a really tough player, but
Cmilyte has greater experience and nerves of steel. Kotsinseva also
has the impetus of her sister, Tatjana, going through to Round 3 - and the
sisters are nothing if not competitive! I see this going all the way
to an Armegeddon game and Cmilyte winning by the non-existent hairs on her
chinny-chin-chin.
|
 | Harinka Dronavalli and Anna Muzychuk.
This is another really tough one to call. Both ladies seem to dig in
and get tougher as their opposition gets tougher. I suppose I should
check to see what the record is of these two chess femmes playing against
each other - but I'm just too damn tired to do that tonight, darlings!
So, I'm calling it purely from the gut - Dronavalli goes through.
|
 | Inna Gaponenko and Katerine Rohonyan.
I'm going with the USA's underdog here and picking Rohonyan. Her win
today with black to equalize was something.
|
 | Nguyen Thi Thanh An and Elena Sedina.
Elena Sedina should have and probably would have been bounced out in Round 1
if Irina Krush had shown up. Sedina is going home. |
Stay tuned and see how I do. No one reads Chess
Femmes News and so I can always change things after the fact and come off like a
frigging genius, har!
